Yervand Kochar Museum

Yervand Kochar was one of the active reformers of modern art, an artist of bold revolutionary concepts. In his paintings, however, there is much that derives from the classical manner.

The Kochar Museum was founded in 1984 on the basis of Master’s Studio.
The Museum of Yervand Kochar is an exceptional center of historical Avantgard in the region.
The creative work of the artist and sculpture Yervand Kochar /1899-1979/ is one of the most interesting phenomena in the XX century.

The top and middle floors of this three-storey building exhibit paintings from 1898 - 1970, and the ground floor displays the artist’s drawings.

During the 13 years spent in Paris, he took part in many international show-exhibitions significant for the century; among them 5 individual exhibitions, that deserved the highest estimation of the artists.

But the artists heart was in his homeland. His friend Yeghisheh Charents, a well-known poet, once remarked: «In Armenia your stand will be as high as that of the Eiffel Tower in Paris». In 1936 Kochar returned to Yerevan. The air of the native land had an invigorating effect on him. The very spirit of his art changed.

The art of Kochar has come to us through the years and we pay tribute to the magnitude of his talent.
