Trekking and Hiking, 14 days, 1460 km (913 miles)

Trekking tours are the best option to feel the land on which you travel. Passing slowly along the mountain and forest paths one might get more familiar with the local population, as well as with the customs and traditions of the country. Therefore tourists open to challenges choose this type of travel to explore a new country.
Day 1
After a brief rest at the hotel, guests will embark on a tour of Yerevan city that includes stops at Republic Square, Victory Park, Mother Armenia, Cafesjian Center for the Arts, The Cascade, a carpet factory, the monument to A.Tamanyan, Opera House, and Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial.

Day 2
Yerevan - Ashtarak - Saghmosavank - Lake Kari - Tegher
A trip to the southern slope of Mount Aragats in Aragatsotn province. From the road leading to Ashtarak there is a panorama on the extinct volcanoes Aragats and Arailer. Near the town of Ashtarak one can see a beautiful view on the gorge of Kasakh river.

Excursion in the city of Ashtarak with a vistit to three churches (Karmravor, Tsiranavor, Spitakavor) located in the city.

Visiting Saghmosavank Monastery («The Monastery of Psalms» V-XIII c.) perched on the West rim of the Kasakh River gorge.

Climbing to Kari Lake via a stony, picturesque path that winds up the slopes of Mount Aragats. On the eastern side of the lake there is a meteorological station «Aragats». Lunch.

A walking tour to Amberd fortress («Fortress of clouds» VII- XIVcc) which is located 2,300 meters above sea level. Amberd is a tall fortress built on a rise in between two streams Amberd and Arkashen.

The tour continues to Tegher monastery(5km – 2 hours) which is a 13th century Armenian monastery and church located on the foot of Mount Aragats near Byurakan.

Day 3
Kobair - Haghpat - Dnevank - Sanahin - Odzun
A trip to Lori. A walking tour to the Monastery of Kobair (40 minutes), where you can see unique medieval frescoes.

Dinner in Kobair, at a peasant’s house where you can taste home-made jam, pickles and cornelian vodka.

The trip continues to Haghpat village and to the Monastery. Haghpat monastery was called the Holy Cross church. Holy water fills the small pool in the church. Believers say this water has curative qualities for people with heart problems.

Descending to the bridge and walking tour to the fortress of Dnevank (1 km, 40 minutes). Then walking tour to Akner village and to Sanahin (1 km, 40 minutes). Visiting the Monastery.

Then the way leads to the village Odzun and visiting the dome basilica of St. Hovhannes (VI c.).

Day 4
Makaravank - Ijevan
A trip by car to Achajur village. Hiking to Makaravank Monastery (X-XII cc., 7 km, the ascent takes 1,5 and the descent -1 hour).
Lunch at the spring on the way to Ijevan.

Day 5
Ijevan - Haghartsin - Jukhtak Vank - Dilijan
A visit to Monastery of Haghartsin which is nestled in thick lush foliated woods of the Tavoush Region. It is a lasting example of harmony between nature and architecture. Religious and secular edifices, the royal graveyard, inscriptions on the walls, and stone crosses made in VII-XIII centuries reflect the history, religious life, architecture, and culture of Medieval Armenia.

The road leads to Dilijan mineral water factory.

A walking tour to the Monastery of Jukhtak Vank (X-XII cc., 1,1 km – 30 minutes).

Day 6
Dilijan - Goshavank - Sevan
A trip to the mountainous Lake Parz (1298m) and from here walking through a forest path (5km – 2.5 hours), crossing Areguni range and coming to the Monastery Nor Getik (Goshavank, 1247 m).

Goshavank was erected in place of an older monastery, Getik, which had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1188. Mkhitar Gosh, a statesman, outstanding scientist and writer, an author of numerous fables and parables and of the first criminal code, took part in building the monastery, which was known as Goshavank in his honor. In Goshavank Mkhitar Gosh founded a school.

Visiting the «blue pearl of Armenia» – Lake Sevan is situated at an altitude of about 2000 meters above sea level.

Day 7
Sevan - Hayravank - Smbataberd - Tsakhats-kar - Eghegis
Visiting the Monasteries(IX c.) on Sevan peninsula.

A trip by car to a village on the western shore of Lake Sevan 12 km from the town of Gavar. In the north-east of the village, on the shore of Lake Sevan, on a rocky promontory stands Hayravank (IX-XII cc.), overlooking the biggest necropolis cross-stone in Noradouz. Fish lunch in Martuni Crossing Selim pass (2400m) and coming to caravanserai.

Visiting churches Zorats Vank and Saint Katherine in Eghegis village. Climbing to the castle Smbataberd (1,8 km – 1 hour). A walking tour to the church Tsaghats Kar (3,1 km - 1,5 hours) and descending to Artabuink village (3 km – 1 hour).

Day 8
Eghegis - Sisian - Karahunj - Tatev - Khndzoresk - Goris
Hiking along mountainous path up to Shatin Monastery (2,5 hours). Lunch. A trip by car to the ancient stone observatory Zorats Karer (Karahunj, II millennium BC), located in Sisian, which combines Bronze Age monuments and is a prehistoric observatory.

Then the trip continues by car to Tatev Monastery (1530m) – the spiritual and cultural center of medieval Armenia, which is famous for its university (XIV- XVcc).

Descending to Khndzoresk village (2,5 km – 1 hour), the panorama of cave town «Old Khnodzoresk».

Day 9
Goris - Gndevank - Jermuk
A trip to Gndevank Monastery (X c.). The route stretches along the right bank of Arpa river.

Proceeding to Jermuk taking the «old Jermuk road».

A visit to the health resort of Jermuk, to the mineral waters and waterfall of Jermuk. Visiting Ketchut reservoir, Lunch. A walk around the city: alley of heroes.

Day 10
Tanahat - Noravank
A trip by car to the Monastery Tanahat (Gladzor University XIII c.).

Visiting Monastery Noravank. One of the masterpieces of medieval Armenian architecture - Noravank the religious center of Syunik province, was built in XIII-XIV centuries by architects Siranes and Momik and is known for its laced stone ornaments.

Day 11
Areni - Khor Virap - Yerevan
Making a trip by car to Areni village which is famous for its wine-making. A trip to the wine factory, watching the technologies and the way of wine preparation, visiting the wine-cellar, wine tasting. Lunch.

Visiting Ararat valley. A visit to Khor Virap Monastery («Deep dungeon»). According to Armenian historian Agatangeghos (5th c.) the future first patriarch of Armenian Apostolic Church, Grigor Lusavorich was imprisoned in this dungeon for 13 years. The monastery is several hundred meters away from the border between Armenia and Turkey, it is on the higher, left bank of Arax river. From here there is a panoramic view of Mount Ararat.

Returning to Yerevan. Evening walking tour in the city. Supper and lodging at a hotel.

Day 12
Yerevan - Zvartnots - Ejmiadzin - Sardarapat - Yerevan
Visiting the remains of Zvartnots Temple («Celestial Angels»VIIc.).

A trip to one of 12 old capitals of Armenia – Ejmiadzin (Vagharshapat) and the First Cathedral of Saint Ejmiadzin, church of Saint Hripsime (VIIc). St Ejmiadzin is believed to be the first Christian church in the world, founded by Gregory the Illuminator in 303 A.D. It is the Holy Seat and the centre of the Armenian Apostolic Church, with the Residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians.

The road leads to the architectural-sculptural memorial complex of the Sardarapat built in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Armenian people's victory over Turkish invaders in 1918. Armenian Ethnography Museum.

Day 13
Yerevan - Garni - Geghard - Yerevan
Visiting Garni castle (3 BC-13 AD) – the summer residence of Armenian kings, seeing the pagan temple of Sun built by Armenian king Trdat Arshakuni (Arshakid) in 77. Lunch.
Walking down to the canyon of Azat river. Walking along the river and visiting the ancient stony bridge of III c. BC. Seeing the «Symphony of Stones» which is naturally formed by volcanoes.

You can see basalt – a rare thing in nature – set in a hexahedron column way. From a distance it seems to be gigantic organ pipes and from below it seems to be honeycombs (5km – 3 hours).

A trip to the Monastery of Geghard («Monastery of the Lance», 12-13 c.), several buildings of which have unsurpassed acoustics.

The name of Geghard is connected with the biblical lance which is preserved here. As it is mentioned in the Bible, by this lance a roman warrior pierced the body of the crucified Christ. A tip of the lance is preserved in the museum of the Cathedral of Saint Ejmiadzin.

Yerevan – Vernissage – Oriental market - Echmiadzin – Zvartnots - Zvartnots airport
A largely dormant concrete park during the week, Vernissage blossoms at the weekends as all kinds of national crafts, including jewelry, carpets, woodwork, ceramics, canvases, paintings, and many other works of art can be found.
Visiting the Oriental market. Shopping.

Visiting the old capital of Armenia – Vagharshapat. Excursion in the territory of residence of the Catholicos – the head of Armenian Apostolic church, then visit to the First Cathedral of Saint Echmiadzin (303 AD), which means the «The Descent of the Only Begotten Son».

A visit to church of Saint Hripsime (VIIc) as well as the ruins of Zvartnots Temple which is a monument that embodies the centuries old traditions of Armenian architects.

Transfer to Zvartnots International Airport.
