GorisGoris town is located in a mountain hollow of river Vararaks valley. The rocks that surround the town are known as «Goris stone forest». Goris is a graceful and beautiful town surrounded by wonderful gardens. Goris is famous for its cave-dwellings carved out of the soft rock in the southern part of town. There are two museums here: one regional and the other Axel Bakunts house museum, commemorating one of Armenias great prose writers. The nature in Goris is astonishing, it has rather rough mountains, from where mineral drinkable water springs down. Tatev Monastery (11th – 12th centuries) is situated 20 kilometers away from Goris and nestled in the steep of river Vorotan canyon, not far away from village Tatev. Tatev in translation from Armenian means «give wings». Tatev Monastery housed 600 monks, philosophers, musicians, painters, calligraphers, and all the other accoutrements of a center of culture and learning. Next to the Monastery you will see the «Satine Bridge» which seems to be not earthy. It is said to be built by nature over the gorge. |
